A Word for the Wounded: Trauma Sensitivity as a Heuristic for Lutheran Ministry

Presenter: Timothy Bourman
Category:
General

According to even the most conservative estimates, more than half of adults in the United States will suffer emotional trauma in their lives. One in five women experience sexual assault. Veterans return home from war every day with wounded hearts and minds. In our cities, domestic abuse and sexual abuse of children are a hidden epidemic. PTSD and PTS have become household terms and part of the national discourse. These wounded people are sitting in the pews of our churches, wanting to hear a Word from God, but what can we say that will make it better? What can a pastor do when a survivor of assault makes her way into the church? What can a pastor preach when the veteran comes in the front door? In this presentation, Dr. Bourman will address all of these questions and more.

Timothy C. Bourman (D.Min, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO) has spent his entire ministry serving as pastor of Sure Foundation Lutheran Church in New York City. He received his doctorate after completing work on his doctoral research under the title “Deep as the Sea: A Lutheran Devotional Bringing Gospel to Trauma.” His research now sets the standard for research for the Doctor of Ministry degree at Concordia, St. Louis. He hosts a popular podcast with his twin brother, Jonathan, called The Notable Podcast, a podcast about making notes in the margins of your Bible. He is author of “Deep As the Sea: Letters to Survivors of Trauma” (NPH), contributor to “Here We Stand” (Wipf and Stock), and “Wisdom and Folly: People’s Bible Devotions” (NPH).

Two Kinds of Righteousness: God’s Design for Human Life

Presenter: Earle Treptow
Category: Pastor

Martin Luther suggested that there are essentially two kinds of righteousness. There’s the righteousness of faith that avails before God and the righteousness of works that counts before the world. Both are necessary for human life as God designed it, but both need to “stay in their lane.” Luther went so far as to describe the distinction between them as “our theology,” the heart of Christian faith and life. This workshop will help Christians grow in their ability to distinguish between the two kinds of righteousness, for their own benefit and to equip them to help others do the same.

Since graduating from the seminary in 1993, Earle Treptow has served in an exploratory mission in British Columbia, as a recruiter for pastoral ministry at Martin Luther College, a parish pastor in Colorado, president of the WELS Nebraska District, and, since 2016, as professor at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. In 2019 he began serving as president of the seminary. He and his wife, Jeanne, have been married for 35 years and have been blessed with a daughter and two sons. He enjoys watching sports and attempting to play basketball.
